Can You Reset Your Codex Usage Limit Early?
Sometimes, yes — actually yes, not just a workaround. Unlike Claude, OpenAI ships a real self-serve reset for Codex called a banked reset. The catch is you can't summon one out of thin air; you can only use one if you already have one sitting on your account.
Banked resets: the real mechanism
A banked reset is a one-time reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires — not purchased credit, and it doesn't raise your plan's limit permanently, it just refreshes what you've already used. OpenAI grants these periodically to Plus, Pro, Go and Business accounts (there were rounds in early September 2026), and a past referral promotion let people earn extra ones for a two-week window, though that specific promotion has since closed.
Each banked reset expires 30 days after it lands — used or not. To check whether you have one and redeem it: open Settings → Usage in the ChatGPT app, on the web, or via the CLI's /usage. If one is available it'll say so there; confirming it refreshes both your 5-hour and weekly windows at once. Worth knowing before you tap confirm: using one also resets your weekly anchor day, so your "week" starts over from that moment rather than staying on its old schedule.
If you don't have one banked
Three other options, none of them a workaround — all documented, official:
- Buy credits. Plus and Pro accounts can purchase extra usage under Settings → Usage → Credits, priced per model (heavier reasoning models cost more per token than lighter ones).
- Upgrade your tier. Pro 5x and Pro 20x multiply the base Pro message budget by 5 or 20 respectively, at a proportionally higher monthly price.
- Run Codex on your own API key. This removes the plan-based meter entirely and bills per token instead — a different cost model, not a free one.
What doesn't work
OpenAI's own support position is explicit about this: they do not issue manual or courtesy resets, and they do not grant replacement resets, credits, or refunds just because you missed an offer or promotion window. If support tells you no, that's the documented policy working as intended, not a bad agent.
Same as on the Claude side: logging out, switching networks, or spinning up a second account tied to the same payment method doesn't touch anything — usage is tracked against your account server-side, not your client.
Keeping track of it
The awkward part of banked resets is that they're easy to forget about until they expire unused — there's no ambient reminder, just a line in a settings screen you have to go looking for.
