Claude Pro vs Max vs Team: Usage Limits Compared

Guide · updated 2026-09-16

Anthropic doesn't publish a fixed "X messages per day" number for any plan — usage cost depends on model, context length, and what you're doing, so a flat count would be misleading the moment it was written. What they do publish, and what actually explains the difference between plans, is a multiplier. Here's each one, quoted directly from Anthropic's own pricing page.

Plan Price Usage per 5-hour session Best for
Pro $17/mo annual
$20/mo monthly
"5x more usage than Free" One person, regular daily use
Max 5x From $100/mo "5x more usage than Pro" One person hitting Pro's limit most days
Max 20x $200/mo "20x more usage than Pro" One person running Claude Code most of the day
Team — standard seat $20/seat/mo annual
$25/seat/mo monthly
2–150 seats
"More usage than Pro" — no exact multiplier published Small team wanting shared billing/admin
Team — premium seat $100/seat/mo annual
$125/seat/mo monthly
"5x more usage than standard seats" Team where most people use Claude heavily

What's actually different, mechanically

Every paid plan uses the same two-window structure: a session limit that resets every 5 hours, and a weekly limit layered on top of it. Upgrading a plan doesn't change that structure — it only widens both windows by the multiplier above. Claude.ai chat, Claude Code, and Cowork all draw from the same pool on every plan; there's no separate "Code quota" that a higher plan adds. (Codex works differently here — its coding usage is a fully separate budget from ChatGPT chat, not a shared one.)

Team seats: individual limits, not a shared pool

The one place people usually guess wrong: a Team workspace does not pool usage across members. Each seat has its own limit, sized by whether it's a standard or premium seat, and one person maxing out their session doesn't take capacity away from anyone else on the team. What is shared within a single seat is the same as everywhere else — chat, Claude Code, and Cowork on that one account all draw from that one seat's allowance.

Which one to actually pick

Pro is enough for occasional-to-regular use where you're not running Claude Code continuously. Max exists specifically for the person who hits Pro's ceiling repeatedly — 5x if that happens a few times a week, 20x if it happens most days you work. Team only makes sense once billing needs to be centralized across more than one person; picking it purely for "more usage" for a single user costs more than Max for less capacity, since Team's per-seat multiplier applies to Pro, not to Max's tiers.

Whichever plan you're on, the plan itself only sets where the wall is — it doesn't tell you how fast you're approaching it. CapMeter reads whichever plan is active on your account and turns the burn rate into a time estimate, so upgrading isn't the only lever when a session's about to run out.
