How to Check Your Codex (ChatGPT) Usage on Mac
Codex has two separate places that show usage, and they don't show the same thing — mixing them up is the most common source of confusion. There's also a third option if you don't want to go looking for the number at all.
Inside the Codex CLI
Two different slash commands, two different scopes. /status reports on the session you're in right now — active model, approval mode, how much context is left in this conversation. /usage is the one that actually answers "how close am I to my limit": it opens a menu for your daily, weekly, or cumulative token activity against your ChatGPT plan. If you only ever check /status, you're looking at the wrong number.
On the ChatGPT usage page
Sign in at chatgpt.com and go to Settings → Usage. This shows your rolling 5-hour window and weekly window as a percentage, plus the reset time for each. It's the same account-level data Codex CLI's /usage is reading — just in a browser instead of a terminal, and you have to remember to open it. (If those two windows themselves are confusing — why there are two, why they don't reset together — this covers just that. And if that screen shows a reset you didn't expect, it's probably a banked reset — Codex actually has one of those, unlike Claude.)
Without having to ask
Both of the above share the same gap: you see the number only when you go check it. A menu bar app can keep it visible continuously instead. CapMeter reads your Codex session the same way it reads Claude's — as an account-level percentage with a live countdown — and shows both providers in the same popup if you use both. If you use Codex and Claude side by side, that's the actual point: one ring in the menu bar instead of two apps, or one app that only covers half of what you use. Here's the same three methods for Claude, if that's the other half. (If you use more than just these two, CodexBar covers a much wider set of providers — worth knowing about even if it's not the fit for everyone.)
